Getting Back to Fun Activities

 June 15, 2020

By  Dr. Joy Lasseter

Now that our governor has lifted some restrictions we can get out for some recreational activities.* Washington and Oregon have relatively lower Covid 19 statistics. Perhaps we can enjoy our local area and remain safer. Here are some ideas. Of course check first with any area you plan to visit. See if they are open. Do they allow out of town visitors? What restrictions apply? We are subject to constantly changing conditions these days. So check again on the day of your adventure.

Going on a car adventure with the family gives the kids a chance to explore new areas. Let the kids choose the location on a map. Then it is an adventure for the whole family. Teach the grandkids how to read a map (paper) and navigate. GPS doesn’t always work in rural areas. Bring a compass and teach them directions.

Go to a park and take a picnic. Buy your supplies and water at the grocery store or bring from home. Eat your picnic first then stow the cooler in the car and go for a hike along a new trail. Bring tree or plant identification books. Become acquainted with the local flora.

Go boating and take food for a picnic on the water. Maybe catch fish for dinner?

Take them home and to cook! Did you plant a vegetable garden? Pick some greens and cook some rice to finish your meal.

Explore historic little towns on foot. Bring food from home or a grocery store in case their restaurants are not open yet. Read about the history of the town. Point out features to children. This is a living history lesson!

Go bicycling on paved trails. I am amazed at how many walking and biking trails we have in the county. Beautiful nature spots are a treat for the eyes. Take photos and create an album of your adventures.

Visit flower farms if they are open and bring home some bulbs, bouquets or plants for your garden as a living memory of your outing.

Go for a walk in one of the huge forested parks in Portland. No grocery stores close by so bring your picnic with you in small day packs. Park and walk for as long as you want to. Maps are usually available outside the visitor centers. Bathrooms are also usually open. Bring a roll of toilet paper in case they are out. Make sure your phones are charged before leaving the car. Dress in layers. Weather can change quickly. Trails can be muddy if it has been raining. Wear hiking shoes.

Take an easy stroll along the waterfront in Vancouver on the east side of 1-5 bridge or at the newly developed area on the west side of that bridge. Paved pathways make it easier for wheelchairs, walkers and canes. Parking is convenient and free on the east side. Pay for parking on the west side.

Part of being healthy is having fun doing things we enjoy with people we love! Getting exercise, spending time in nature, breathing fresh air. Share the fun with your loved ones. These are some of my activities too. Having goals, a purpose and gratitude are helping me get through this challenging time. Enjoy your adventures!

P.S. *Check the guidelines and phases from the governor in your state.
