Dr. Joy’s Joyful Pleasures: DIY Fall Décor for Your Home

Try these craft activities to keep yourself focused on fun. And make your home festive too!

Welcoming Front Door Area

Make a door wreath using craft store silk flowers, small pumpkins, squash, acorns, bird, etc.

Fasten the items to a wreath frame (wood, vine, foam, or wire) using a hot glue gun, or thin green wire twisted around the frame and item. Ask the craft clerk for suggestions.

Pot some colorful plants in a container by your front door. Choose plants with these Fall colors (orange, burgundy, rust, gold, red, and yellow-green). Keep them watered.

Table setting ideas: Dining Room table cloth and napkins in fall colors can create an ambiance with little effort. I prefer to use solid colors instead of patterns. That way I can use a yellow, red, burgundy, orange or rust tablecloth for different seasons. Set the table with contrasting colors for napkins. They don’t all have to match. This will add interest.

Make napkin rings to further enhance your special meals. Ask the craft store clerk about supplies for this project. Then fasten them together as recommended based on the type of items you selected. Or use existing ones and decorate them.

Make a silk floral arrangement for the centerpiece. Choose a container (basket, hollowed-out squash, or pumpkin) or one of your vases. (If you are going to use a squash or pumpkin put your floral arrangement in a glass container and set it inside the squash. Put the squash on a plate or tray on the table.) Buy a selection of silk flowers in Fall colors. Take the vase with you and arrange the flowers in the vase at the store. This will prevent repeat trips and save time.

Use Living Room throw pillows and silk floral arrangements in Fall colors to spruce up this room which is always the focus for guests and visitors during the holidays.

Use Fall colors in guest bathroom towels, rug, toilet seat cover, and silk flower arrangement.

Patio, Gazebo, Deck Area

Throw pillows in Fall colors brighten up covered furniture. Choose 3 different solid colored pillows for a splash of color. Remember you can use solid colors for other holidays.

But Thanksgiving, Easter or Christmas designs are only good for 1 season!

Silk flower arrangement on covered outdoor table. Only use table cloths if you are going to be spending time in that area. Unexpected wind can lift the tablecloth and send it flying away. The same is true for your flower arrangement. If the vase is glass then bring it inside when you come in for the night.

String lights in the gazebo or in the covered patio or deck area. This is especially cozy when you are sharing a meal together. As evenings get longer it is a pleasant way to light your event. If you have an outlet close by, hang some light strings up in the area above your head. Make sure you don’t have any extension cords on the floor for people to trip over.

Tape them down if necessary, to avoid accidents.
